Wittgenstein’s Landscapes / Wall of Language IASPIS-project Stockholm 2000

Plasterboards, wood, text. 7 x 6 x 2,7 meters

This work consists of five rows with a total of twenty-five plasterboard screens. The ”Philosophical Investigations” by Ludwig Wittgenstein is its starting point, and the location is carefully chosen – a late 1900-century building with a richly ornamented and palace-like hallway, through which the visitor enters the exhibition-space. The first row of boards, each sliding in its own rail, carries the different suffixes for nouns, verbs and adjectives used in the Swedish language. In the remaining seventeen screens there are words sawn-out, the words used in a sentence to change direction and meaning, to connect sentences, words stating being and belonging and to ask questions or express doubt. The words of which we try to make sense, language in which we move, going through, words which moves us, shifting, changing. Language as reflecting, opaque and transparent.
